The focus of our inquiry topic this term is based around Law and order. For my Law and Order topic I chose Dawn raids. I chose this topic because my grandparents were victims of the Dawn raids and I also want to learn more about the history, who were involed etc etc. Our class is also learning other law and orders like domestic violence, rights being taken away and many more.
Dawn raids began in 1974 and ended 1979, Dawn raids targeted people who overstayed their visas, deporting them back to the islands. This impacted alot of pacific islanders who would be falsely accused of being an overstayer and would lose their jobs due to these false information. Pacific islanders would be traumatized due to the fact that police would buss down doors early in the morning or even late at night just to find overstayers but some of those overstayers would try and find a safe place to stay. After all the trauma the pacific community have been through New Zealands prime minsiter Jacinda Ardern apologised to all of pacific islanders who were effected by the dawn raids.
Here is a link to a article that I read about which has alot of information about the dawn raids
Great blog Sofaia about what your class is learning for inquiry. Honestly i never knew anything about the Dawn raids until this year. Glad you can learn about it and appreciate what your grandparents went through. Excited to see more blogs about Dawn raids. Well done girl
ReplyDeleteHey Sofaia - what an awesome blog especially because it is a topic I am very passionate and interested in. I like how you have given clear information about the impact the Dawn Raids had on your family and our Pasifika people during that time. Just as a thought could you maybe interview someone in your family who may have experienced the Dawn Raids? Keep up the awesome mahi!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog. A very good insight to the lives of pacifica people during the dawn raids. I hope we have come along way since those days.
